STEVE VILE'S  "PLAYTIME "

STEVE VILE IS AN UTTERLY ENTHUSIASTIC BUT TERRIBLY UNCOORDINATED ATHLETE AND THE SON OF DR. SEYMOUR VILE. HE IS ALWAYS AND FOREVER THE EPITOME OF A REALLY “GOOD SPORT ” DESPITE HIS PROXIMITY TO FAILURE IN MOST CATEGORIES OF MEASURE -- LACKING NOT ONLY ANY SKILL, BUT ALSO ANYONE TO PLAY WITH. LETTUCE PRESENTS A PERSONA IMBUED WITH THE ERRATIC EROTICS OF FAGGOTRY AND FAILURE, AS STEVE PLAYS TENNIS BY HIMSELF IN THE GALLERY, SPORADICALLY INTERRUPTED BY THE UNPREDICTABLE ITERATIONS OF HIS “WARM-UP ” THEME SONG, TO WHICH HE CAN NEVER SEEM TO ALIGN. COMPLICATING SUCH COERCIVE STRUCTURES OF SPORT, MASCULINITY, AND ATHLETICISM THROUGH HIS HEARTFELT MONOLOGUE-IN-MOTION, STEVE URGES THE IMPORTANCE OF “P - 4 - P ”: PLAYING FOR PLEASURE, PLAYING FOR PLAY’S SAKE -- AUTOEROTIC, UNINTERRUPTED, AND UNPROFESSIONAL PLAYTIME -- IN THE FACE OF SOCIETY’S ALIENATING COMPETITIVENESS AND CANNIBALISTIC CAPITALISM.
